Sciatica Treatments

Although sciatica often gets better without any treatment, the healing process can be enhanced by following a few simple guidelines. Most episodes of sciatica are once-in-a-lifetime; however, some people have a tendency to have a flare-up occasionally. It may be necessary to adopt a lifestyle of preventive measures if you're prone to sciatica.

Ice packs should be kept on hand for acute sciatica as the initial treatment. The general rule for use is 20 minutes every two hours until the pain begins to subside. Cold is effective in reducing the swelling around the nerve endings, and this often reduces the level of pain. Once the pain begins to subside, typically within a day or so, alternating ice and heat can bring additional relief.

Many patients find great relief from visiting an osteopathic physician, physical therapist, physiatrist, or chiropractor. These professionals are specifically trained in the management of sciatica and conditions of the lower back. In addition to guiding you through proper exercise techniques to help prevent future sciatica flare-ups, they may also use ultrasound therapy such as MendMeShop Therapeutic Ultrasound to achieve a reduction in swelling. Sound waves actually cause the anti-inflammatory medicine in our newly created Lavender Infusion Gel to penetrate deep into the muscle tissue for rapid pain control.

There are surgical sciatica treatments available for extreme cases of unresolved sciatica; however, most episodes can be resolved with the use of conservative measures and anti-inflammatory medications.
